Abstract

This study aimed to analyse the round-off backwards tucked somersault (RO BTS) take-off using kinematics and kinetics to inform coaching practice; to see whether it is the strength or technique that creates the ‘perfect’ take-off. Data was collected from 13 participants split into three groups: regional female (n = 10), international male (n = 2), international female (n = 1). All participants reported RO BTS kinematic, accelerometer and countermovement (CMJ) jump performance force data. The regional gymnasts (R) showed greatest flexion at the knee. When combining with accelerometer data, it is suggested that slower resultant acceleration (7 m/s-2) from the R gymnasts stems from losing power due to excessive knee flexion. Combining kinematic, kinetic and force platform data, it is leg strength that creates high velocity and force that contributes to explosive power needed to create height of the BTS from a RO. This technique analysis creates a model to inform coaching practice regarding parameters that contribute to ‘perfect’ take-off for beginners to follow to then progress to more complex elements.
